M.D. Author Information Dr Simopoulos is the Director of Nutritional Sciences of the International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) Research Foundation. Previously, Dr. Simopoulos chaired the Nutrition Coordinating Committee at the National Institutes of Health from 1978 to 1986. She is a pediatrician and endocrinologist with a long and distinguished career, including research on the effects of polyunsaturated fatty acids in seafoods, and on the role of Ω-3 fatty acids in health, diseases, growth and development. Nutrition Today: March 1988 - Volume 23 - Issue 2 - p 10-19 Buy Abstract The purpose of this and a paper to appear in the next issue is to present an overview of the role of Ω-3 fatty acids in growth and development and in health and disease. Part I discusses w-3 fatty acid sources and metabolism, the elongation and desaturation of α-linolenic acid and the role of ω-3 fatty acids in pregnancy and fetal growth, human milk and infant feeding, childhood and aging. Part II consists of an overview of the subject as it relates to cardiovascular disease (hypolipidemic, anti-thrombotic and antihypertensive effects) and inflammation, immunology and cancer.
