Abstract

The occurrence and acceptance of work-related accidents is a reflection of the development of a company's safety culture. Determining the development of a company's current safety culture is a top priority because it is difficult to set a course for the future if the current location is not known. Therefore, the logical first step is to examine accident occurrences in the near and recent past and determine trends. This chapter concentrates on accident trends. Accident trends are important when assessing a safety culture. To determine where safety culture has been and where the culture is at this point in time, the typical starting point that is used, which some people consider to be a primary tool, is the accident log. The chapter also offers a short discussion on some useful tools to determine safety culture development.
