Abstract
This chapter gives an overview of both the history and current work in active aircraft morphing technologies. These adaptive structures have been utilized since the earliest days of manned flight to provide maneuver control. In the past they were neglected, as higher speed and power aircraft required strong, rigid structures, and no weight or volume could be spared for the more complex systems required to actuate morphing structures. However, recent advances in materials technology and actuator miniaturization, along with the increased use of small and micro unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), have brought these structures and technologies back into the spotlight for both maneuver control and expansion of the flight envelope.
