Abstract

Some years ago an enthusiastic group of persons within the Wetzlar firm Grfin Analysenger/ite (Federal Republic of Germany) started the construction of a new instrument for atomic absorption spectrophotometry. They decided to base the instrument on the Zeeman principle of background correction and on constructing the instrument principally for direct analysis of solid materials. Other manufacturers have also based their background correction system on the Zeeman splitting of atomic lines, but to the author's best knowledge no other instrument manufacturer has introduced instruments particularly adapted to solid sampling work. The initiative taken in Wetzlar has led to considerable activity in the Federal Republic of Germany in the field of solid sampling atomic absorption spectrophotometry (SSAAS), and today the country plays a leading role in the field. Two years ago the first colloquium on this subject was arranged in Wetzlar by the active group already mentioned
