Abstract

It is shown that cystine and to a less extent tyrosine residues may be destroyed when wool is ground. Although sulphate radicals, cysteic acid, and lanthionine residues have been identified in the product, the degradation produced by grinding is not confined to disulphide-bond fission. The mechanism of the disruption chemical bonds during the grinding process is discussed.
