Abstract
A method of surface coating onto a steel plate through explosive compaction is proposed which utilizes the heat released by the combustion of a self-combustible material placed with the powder coating layer. As an example, thin WC-Co mixed powder layer was consolidated using underwater shock wave derived from the detonation of an explosive, and a positive effect of the use of self-combustible material was confirmed. The following heat treatment for the coated samples showed the improvement of the hardness and the wear resistance and the optimum heat treatment condition was suggested.
