Abstract

Skin disease is extremely common and can affect anyone, with more than 2000 recognised conditions and presentations. Skin disorders may be primary and isolated or may have systemic features. Likewise, systemic disease often has dermatological manifestations. It is therefore essential that all clinicians have a good understanding of common skin conditions. This chapter will cover the key aspects of normal skin anatomy and physiology and of clinical examination and relevant investigations. The chapter will also include information relating to how common skin diseases present, for example as a lesion or a rash, and will describe the main principles involved in management. The disorders that are most commonly seen in clinical practice will be covered in detail, for example, skin infections, psoriasis, eczema, acne, skin tumours, and hair and nail diseases. The importance of skin disease in general medicine will be emphasised and will include management of acute skin failure, and information will be provided with regards to drug eruptions, reactive, genetic and metabolic skin diseases and cutaneous manifestations of systemic disease.
