Abstract

Integrated sustainable urban transport planning links land use planning to mobility planning in order to improve life quality for all. Many technological and systemic approaches exist to make transport systems more efficient, including smart growth approaches such as transit-oriented development and walkable communities. However, in many instances, routines, preferences and prejudices prevent a change of mobility patterns. Changing consumer behaviour requires engaging local populations in a constructive and open dialogue. As there is no single silver bullet, different urban density levels require different solutions, taking into consideration not only public preferences and long-term trends, but also financial constraints.
