Abstract

Pregnancy can be an ideal time to use herbal and alternative remedies. Herbs are often mild preparations of natural compounds that can be just perfect for some of the discomforts and illnesses during pregnancy. But there are many concerns by providers regarding the safety and efficacy of herbal and alternative remedies. Using the most up-to-date data from evidence-based medicine as well as traditional medicine, this chapter outlines those herbal and alternative remedies that are safe and effective for patients, and describes doses, situations, and efficacy for their use. Since herbs and supplements do not have FDA oversight, individual preparations can vary significantly in their contents and impurities. Providers and patients can find guidance on product purity and integrity from sources such as ConsumerLab.com. The safety and efficacy of hypnosis and meditation as alternative remedies for the problems and discomforts in obstetrics are also presented.
