Abstract

Fretting is generated when a pair of structural elements is in contact under a normal load while cyclic stress and relative displacement are forced along the contact surface. Wear of contact surfaces near contact edges occur in accordance with the reciprocal micro-slippage on these contact surfaces. The contact conditions near contact edges are changed by these fretting wear. In the estimation of the fretting fatigue strength and life, it is necessary to evaluate the wear depth and contact pressure distribution near the contact edges in each fretting fatigue process. In this paper, contact pressure and relative slippage on the contact surface were calculated by finite element method. And wear depth near contact edges was estimated by using classic Archard's equation. The wear which generated on specimen after the fretting fatigue test was observed by the microscope.
