Abstract
Automatic collision avoidance systems are being developed for active safety of a vehicle. It is necessary to establish the design method of the optimum avoidance strategies and optimum operation timing in the development. In this paper motion simulation of the vehicle with simple automatic brake or simple automatic steering is conducted to clarify the minimum avoidance distance and the relation between the vehicle speed and the optimum avoidance strategy. As a result, the optimum avoidance strategy is the brake in the lower speed, and the steering avoidance becomes adequate over the cross point of velocity
