Abstract

Blood conservation and transfusion medicine are of paramount importance to physicians caring for children in perioperative settings. In order to do so effectively, we describe the normal development of hemoglobin structure and function in both term and premature infants. We describe several perioperative strategies for reducing blood loss and the risks and benefits of whole blood and individual component transfusions. Where available, the most current pediatric literature is reviewed and cited.
