Abstract

Placement of plastic pancreaticobiliary stents for drainage of the bile duct and pancreas duct is routinely performed in clinical practice. These stents are used for a variety of indications, in both malignant and benign conditions, and have proven efficacious and safe for use in the pancreas and biliary tree. Plastic stents are easy to insert, effective for decompression, and inexpensive to use. Almost all plastic stents are hollow tubes. They are available in a variety of configurations (i.e. straight, single pigtail, double pigtail) and lengths; are composed of either Teflon, polyethylene, or polyurethane; and are available from several leading industry partners. Plastic stents have limited patency due to occlusion with debris and biofilm and require periodic replacement (timing based on stent diameter) when long-term drainage is needed.
