Abstract

Hepatitis, or liver inflammation, is a leading cause of liver-related morbidity and mortality. Chronic hepatitis C infection incidence is increasing in the United States. Universal hepatitis C screening of adults is recommended, as is hepatitis C virus (HCV) screening among pregnant women. Direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapy is recommended for all people with active HCV infection. DAA therapy is highly effective and safe with few serious adverse effects. Drug–drug interactions with DAAs require careful pretreatment consideration. Supplements, botanicals, and other complementary therapies for chronic hepatitis C can help reduce oxidative stress in the liver, support health immune function, and enhance quality of life.
