Abstract
The concepts of safety case, safety and performance assessments are explained. ICRP and IAEA safety requirements for disposal facilities are discussed. The content of safety assessment reports and the safety assessment process are described, including consideration of features, events and processes. The performance of cement, bitumen and glass in a disposal environment is examined, including glass performance in confined conditions (geological repository) and radiation effects. A review of underground research laboratories is given.
