Abstract

The documentation of explosion protected apparatus, systems, and installations should be comprehensive and should include appropriate area classification drawings showing the zone of the hazardous area where all parts of all electrical installations are located, the sub-grouping of all gases, vapors and mists present, and the ignition temperature of any gases, vapors, mists, and dusts. Certificates/approval documents for all items of certified/approved apparatus, the sub-grouping and surface temperature classification awarded, and any information necessary to highlight any special installation requirements included in the certificate/approval for a particular installation, should also be included. The three types of inspections for of explosion protected installations include initial inspection, routine inspection, and visual inspection. Initial inspection is a fully detailed inspection, which is necessary after initial installation or replacement of apparatus before the installation is energized or re-energized. Routine inspection, normally requires isolation of the installations being inspected for at least part of the inspection procedure. Visual inspection is a more cursory inspection looking for obvious external problems, such as corrosion, or damage, and it does not require isolation of the installation unless any potential problems are identified, when it should trigger a detailed inspection of the installation or part of the installation in question, carried out on the basis of the initial inspection criteria. General maintenance functions are limited to replacing components with direct replacements supplied by the apparatus manufacturer, or guaranteed to be identical to those damaged. Typical of these are covers of flameproof enclosures, transformers in intrinsically safe or associated apparatus. In some cases, the component is a standard electrical component not unique to the apparatus in question, such as a resistor or a terminal.
