Abstract
This study analyzes works cited in influential historical journals to explore citation characteristics and archival applications in the field of history. The research data are composed of references cited between 2006 and 2014 in four THCI Core historical journals, including Bulletin of the Institute of Modern History, Academia Sinica, Taiwan Historical Research, The Journal of History, NCCU, and Historical Inquiry, NTU. The archival types, languages, publication years, and the average number of citations of a total of 469 journal articles with their 32,055 cited references are analyzed. Among these cited references, 3,042 pieces of works and records are specifically selected to delineate citation characteristics of historical researchers. Research results show that monographs are the main type of cited references, while archives make up about ten percent of cited references. Most of the cited archives are official records. Most of the cited references were written in Chinese. Sources of frequently cited references include literary and historical institutions in Taiwan and National Archives Administration. Research results of this study may serve as reference for the future development of archival collection and user service.
