Abstract
Prologue. In March 1998, I took the first Distinguished Instructor Short Course (DISC), Time-Lapse Seismic in Reservoir Management, by Ian Jack. I was immediately impressed by a wonderful service for SEG members and, most importantly, for the students! In February 2002, at a business lunch, Peter Duncan mentioned that he was the chairman of the DISC subcommittee of SEG's Continuing Education (CE) Committee and that, for 2003, EAGE was considering proposing the DISC on deepwater geology. I gave him the names of several amply qualified European geoscientists who could teach such a course. A few months later, I saw Peter at the GCAGS convention in Austin, Texas (USA). He reported that EAGE chose Olivier Dubrule to lecture on geostatistics and that SEG was going to choose the deepwater lecturer for 2004. I asked who they had chosen, and he said me! I was stunned at first; we talked about the details for a few minutes. I ruminated on the decision for two months and then agreed to do it! The opportunity to take my family to some of these exotic places was just too great to pass up.
