Abstract

Standards for dietetics education have existed in various forms since 1924. The US Department of Education (USDE) first recognized the American Dietetic Association (ADA) in 1974 as the accrediting body for dietetic internships and coordinated undergraduate programs. Currently, the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) is responsible for the ADA's accrediting functions. In 1993, CADE began accrediting all programs with a supervised practice component, and in 1999 accreditation was extended to include all didactic programs in dietetics. Standards for accreditation have evolved with changes in practice.
