Abstract
Optical soliton data signals at 20 Gbit/s have been successfully transmitted for the first time over a 1020 km-long dispersion-shifted fibre. Erbium-doped fibre amplifiers were installed as optical 1R repeaters at every 50 km. A bit error rate of below 10/sup -12/ was obtained with 2/sup 23/-1 pseudorandom patterns under a penalty-free condition. >
