Abstract

The temperature and electromagnetic effects on erbiumdoped fiber (EDF) amplifier (EDFA) systems are investigated. First, the temperature sensitivity at the connection of single-mode fiber and erbium-doped fiber in an EDFA system pumped at 980 nm amounts to -0.023 dB °C21 (or -7.2 mV °C-1) in the temperature range of 25 to 95°C. This can be accounted for by the temperature-induced coupling loss and the gain characteristics of the EDFA. Second, the effect of electric and magnetic fields on the EDF of the EDFA system are shown. The electromagnetic interference effect on the photodiode and its light power and wavelength dependences are also discussed.
