Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of the current state of the knowledge in epizootiology of furunculosis. Epizootiology is the study of disease in populations of animals that encompasses both the study of the incidence of disease and the factors that influence that incidence. The chapter explains the reason behind the switch from studies of furunculosis to studies of the pathogen A. salmonicida. The factors influencing the switch are also introduced. There is remarkable knowledge based on furunculosis vaccines. The coding sequence for the haemolysin gene of A. salmonicida has been deciphered but nothing is known about the efficiency of inflow filtration in preventing the infection of a freshwater farm stock.
