Abstract

This chapter presents the systematic development of a conceptual process flowsheet based on Process Systems methods, namely on the Hierarchical Approach. The methodology consists of analysis, synthesis, and evaluation steps leading to several alternatives, from which one or a limited number are selected for further development. Process simulation is imbedded at each step for supporting analysis tasks and design decisions. Process synthesis deals with the creation of process flowsheets, including the preliminary design of units and the formulation of consistent material and heat balances. In process integration, the design is refined regarding the effective use of energy and resources, safety, health, and environmental aspects, as well as plantwide control issues. The final result is an efficient framing of the optimal space design such that detailed sizing, optimization, and economic assessment of units can be applied.
