Abstract

While the age of transparency and its attendant technologies provide you with many opportunities that those before you did not have, you need to make prudent decisions about using them. Knowing you can does not mean you should. It is reported that those aged 18 to 30 years outpace older Americans in virtually all types of Internet and cell phone use. They are more likely to have their own social networking profiles, to connect to the Internet wirelessly when away from home and work, and to post video of themselves online. This chapter encourages students to use digital tools to meet professional needs, but cautions about the potential pitfalls if such tools are not used in a professional manner. The chapter discusses the advantages and disadvantages of reading and writing blogs, taking part in social networking web sites, uploading videos to YouTube, and posting a resume online.
