Abstract

Metallic materials are extensively used as biomaterials, but they often present insufficient corrosion and wear resistance in the body environment, toxicity of their corrosion and wear products and limited bioactivity. Most of these limitations can be addressed by appropriate surface engineering methods, in particular, by laser-based surface treatment methods. In this chapter the main laser surface treatment methods used to enhance the corrosion and wear resistance of biomaterials are briefly presented and their applications to the most important metallic biomaterials summarised.
