Abstract
The history of the development of hot strip mills is detailed. Thin slab mills, Generation I, II and III mills are described and their dimensions and capabilities are given. The advantages of the coil box and features of the Steckel mills and slabbing mills are mentioned. Innovations in the hot rolling process are listed and hot strip mill upgrades are outlined. Electrical systems and computer control are presented. Much of the information has been gathered from brochures prepared by Hatch Industries Ltd, SMS Siemag AG and Mitsubishi-Hitachi.
