Abstract

The reasons to share genomic data are numerous and range from fulfilling our ethical obligations to research participants to enabling cutting-edge science by increasing the power possible in genomic studies. Indeed, the genomics field's success is, at least in part, due to the data-sharing culture that the Human Genome Project's leaders infused into the earliest days of its development. As genomics research and technologies evolve and become further integrated across biomedical research through policy and community-driven efforts, data sharing—of genomic and other data types—continues to propel major advances in basic biology, common and rare disease research, and emerging disciplines, such as precision medicine. However, responsible data stewardship and on-going attention to the ethical and the technical challenges intrinsic to genomic and health data sharing will remain fundamental to earn and sustain trust with the individuals, communities, and populations who ultimately enable data sharing through their data donations.
