Abstract

Various electroanalytical techniques have been employed in recent years to investigate the mechanisms of electron transfer and bioelectrochemistry in microbial fuel cells (MFCs) and related systems. These techniques stem from the approaches of classic electrochemistry and include routine use of cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance analysis. This chapter describes a range of techniques based on a description of some underlying theories of electron transfer at solution/solid interfaces and in ionic solutions. Examples of application of these techniques to MFCs and other bioelectrochemical systems are also described.
