Abstract

This chapter explores the relation between the concept of DT and the present- day interest in studying variation which characterizes contemporary linguistics. Using the metatheoretical distinction between the pretheoretical phenomic reality technically known as research or study matter and the abstractions performed by linguists from the reality of the research matter and instituted as analytical categories, which will be called study objects, it pays attention both to the latu sensu definition of the notion of DT in its original coining and to the possibility to distinguish DTs stricto sensu from categories such as genre, register, style, and conceptional profile.
