Abstract

This chapter describes the determinants of obesity in the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region. We have expanded the conceptual model proposed by Amarasinghe and D'Souza (2009) to describe the different sets of influences grouped into three layers: individual, neighbourhood and technological effects. Understanding the potential relationship between the determinants and obesity provides policy makers with well-grounded and well-designed policies to control the increasing rate of overweight and obesity in the population. In addition to this conceptual model, the nutritional transition phenomenon that characterises modern societies is complementary to the overall explanation for the increasing prevalence of obesity in LAC countries. This chapter also shows that technological change contributes to the accumulation of body fat and energy savings.
