Abstract

Oxide-based perovskite materials constitute a fascinating group of mixed metal oxide with a flexible crystal structure, composition, and surface chemical properties that enable the tailoring of electronic properties for different applications. Thermal and chemical stability, supermagnetic, photocatalytic, thermoelectric, and dielectric properties, electronic conductivity, electrically active structure, and the mobility of oxide ions through the crystal lattice are some interesting properties exhibited by perovskite oxides. The exciting applications of perovskite oxides are in catalysis, solar cells, and electrochemical sensing. This chapter includes a comprehensive coverage of the different aspects of perovskite oxides. Details regarding the crystal structure and synthesis methods are summarized, and emphasis is given on the catalytic aspects. Different heterogeneous catalytic reactions of perovskite oxide, the importance of Group VIII metals in perovskite structures, and their use in biomass conversion are also summarized.
