Abstract

In an attempt to overcome many of the problems with the manufacture and mechanical properties of laminates, considerable attention has been given over the past 30 years to the development of advanced structures reinforced with 3-D fibre architectures. Among the large family of textile structures, 3-D fabrics have attracted the most serious interest in the aerospace industry and served as a catalyst in stimulating the revival of interest in textile composites. Considering the importance of 3-D fabrics, in this chapter some of the applications of 3-D woven, knitted, non-woven and braided fabrics to advanced composites, medical textiles, sports, geotextiles, space and protective garments are presented.
