Abstract

The chapter focusses on the main components of modern integrated control and safety system, and importance of system interfaces. Safety and automation system is also discussed in this chapter. Control unit offers continuous control, batch control, logic, advanced control, simulation, neural network and knowledge-based systems, a PCS-oriented programming language, dual or triple redundancy, high scan rates, high-resolution time stamping, and a communication processor that can handle popular protocols. The operating system is the primary interface for operators, engineers, and management. It provides all the necessary graphic, mimic, tabular, trend, reports, configuration, and diagnostic displays to satisfy all the system user's requirements. The use of microelectronics in field instruments has opened a new era in the application of interfacing C&I systems. Multiphase flow metering, subsea control and instrumentation system, vessel control system, conditioning monitoring, reliability, and availability analysis are also explained in this chapter.
