Abstract

Biorefining is considered as a source of sustainable and renewable biomass development for industrial production of different high-value products like lipids, proteins/peptides, carotenoids, pigments and carbohydrates. Nowadays, this is the most promising approach for developing biomass-based industries. Microalgae feedstocks are now being focused upon for the development of a spectrum of biorefinery products. However, these biorefineries have several limitations, which are mainly related to the processing of algal biomass. This chapter describes the general concept of sustainable algal biorefinery and comprehensive information on the latest status of microalgal bioproducts. Here, new outlooks and challenges are explored, new emerging technologies are discussed, and algal biorefineries on a large scale are discussed.
