Abstract

PIERRE MERLE, PATRICK MEAR Exceptional growth in the number of high-school pupils during the 1980' s has mechanically induced a global democratization in the last three years of the curriculum. But the question of democratization has been reframed : social discrimination against specific curricula within high-schools has maintained, if not made worse, social and educational inequalities that homogenization of access to high-school had previously eliminated or hidden. However the statistical approach to the democratization of the school system provides an incomplete picture of education reforms carried out in the 1980' s because it ignores the educational strengthening of social elites while overestimating the democratization process.
