Abstract

This is the fifteenth in the series of biennial salary surveys conducted by ASCE. Salary data is reported on six major civil engineering employment categories: (1)Consulting; (2)construction; (3)state departments and agencies; (4)municipalities, counties, and regional authorities; (5)railroads, utilities, and industries; and (6)education. Federal GS salary scales are also provided. Salary data is correlated to ASCE professional Grade levels I/II through IX. Data on fringe benefits as a percentage of base payroll is also provided. Accompanying figures and tables show 1979 median entrance. And maximum rates paid for each professional grade level by employment category, provide geographic relationships, and indicate percent changes from previous survey data. Employer familiarity with and opinion on Manual 55, use of professional grade descriptions, liability coverage, and anticipation of demand for civil engineers are also reported along with numbers of employees with BS, MS, and PhD degrees and holding professional registration.
