She is Professor in History and Australian Research Council Professorial Fellow at the University of Melbourne. Her books include The Limits of Hope: Soldier Settlement in Victoria 1915–38, (Melbourne: Oxford University Press, 1987), Getting Equal: The History of Feminism in Australia (St Leonards, NSW: Allen and Unwin, 1999), FAITH: Faith Bandler Gentle Activist (Crows Nest, NSW: Allen and Unwin, 2002) and (with Henry Reynolds) Drawing the Global Colour Line: White Men’s Countries and the International Challenge of Racial Equality (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2008).
