Abstract
The chapter discusses different deterioration mechanisms that affect the performance and reliability of bridges. Focus is on reinforced concrete (RC) and post-tensioned (PT) bridges. First, a general discussion is provided on different forms of deterioration along with an overview of the underlying physical phenomena and their influencing factors, which include material properties and environmental conditions. Then, the chapter focuses specifically on corrosion mechanisms and provides a quantitative assessment of the effects of corrosion on the performance and reliability of RC bridges. Finally the chapter suggests future directions on the topics presented.
