Abstract

This chapter discusses which surgical procedures benefit from a popliteal block. We discuss how to perform a popliteal block using anatomic landmarks, nerve stimulation and ultrasound. It is important to be aware of the different transducer and needle orientations as well as the various patient positions in which this block can be performed. We will review components of the sciatic nerve (posterior tibial and common peroneal nerves) and blood vessels to avoid. There are different local anesthetic options for both single shot injections and continuous infusions through a catheter.
