Abstract

A long-lived isomer of 186Re was isolated from neutron-irradiated rhenium metal. The existence of this isomer is attributed to a 50 keV E5 transition from a level assigned the configuration 8 + { 5 2 + [402↑] p; 11 2 + [615] n}. A half-life of 2 × 10 5y was determined by a combination of mass-spectrometric analysis and γ-ray spectrometry with Ge(Li) detectors. The decay properties are compared with earlier studies of the low-level structure of 186Re. This isomer is formed in approximately 0.3 % of the thermal-neutron captures in 185Re.
