Abstract
Habituation is the decrease of pain with repetitive painful stimulation involving both peripheral and central mechanisms and may play an important role in protection against the development of chronic pain. While previous research indicates that aging is associated with deficient pain modulatory mechanisms, age differences in habituation have been poorly characterized. Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate differences in habituation of prolonged heat pain in older adults compared to younger adults.
