Abstract

PLA is without doubt the most commercially used biopolyester in food packaging applications. In spite of this, the biopolymer has significant property shortages such as excessive rigidity, low thermal resistance and relatively low gas and vapour barrier properties compared to PET. In this chapter, the general properties of PLA are first discussed and then the latest literature regarding the development of PLA nanocomposites with enhanced performance of interest in food packaging applications is reviewed.
