Abstract

This chapter reviews the in-cylinder spray, mixing, combustion and pollutant-formation processes of three characteristic modes of diesel combustion. The first mode is conventional diesel combustion, with fuel injection near top-dead-center of the piston’s stroke, and with ignition before the end of injection. The second mode is low-temperature combustion using exhaust gas recirculation, with fuel injection either earlier or later than conventional diesel engines, and with ignition after the end of injection. The third mode is also low-temperature combustion using exhaust gas recirculation, but with ignition typically before the end of injection. The chapter closes with remarks on current research needs.
