Abstract

The optimal role of parents in adolescent behaviors related to weight loss treatments, including bariatric surgery, remains unclear. This may be partially due to variability in developmental tasks related to autonomy. Limited work suggests that older adolescents and those with more involved families experience better weight loss outcomes. Yet, other demographic and psychosocial factors also may influence perceptions of responsibility. The current study explored associations between a range of demographic and psychosocial factors and teens’ perceptions of responsibility for weight-related surgery and behaviors.
