Abstract

Commonly used adhesives for bonding brackets to teeth have been the glass ionomer cements (GICs) and resin-modified glass ionomer cements (RMGICs). Each adhesive displays a different adhesion mechanism. This chapter presents the chemistry of the GICs and RMGICs, discusses their manipulation, bonding, and debonding in orthodontics, and concludes with comments on the causes of bond failures.
