Abstract
Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common chronic inflammatory skin disease that affects up to 20% of children and 10% of adults. AD is characterized by dry, itchy skin and recurring eczematous lesions, thought to be triggered by environmental factors in genetically susceptible individuals. Genetic variation has a high contribution to AD, with heritability estimates up to 90%. The major predisposing genetic factors for AD include loss-of-function variants in filaggrin (FLG) gene that lead to epidermal barrier dysfunction, and variants in immune regulatory genes, such as interleukin-13 (IL13).
