Abstract

The demographic statistics, population pyramids, and gerontological modeling document the aging of the world’s population. These stark data, however, do not capture the experience of living in a society that has forever been transformed. All of us are a part of the new aging world. This chapter revisits a framework for older the safe transportation of older adults and emphasizes the important connections between the various stakeholders involved in older adult transportation. Also discussed are several themes the cut across book chapters. Finally, research needs that arose from the book as well as recently published needs are reviewed in relation to seven areas: improving vehicles, improving roadways, improving screening and assessment, improving stakeholder knowledge, improving policy, improving transportation options, and improving collaborations.
