Abstract
Breast conserving therapy (BCT) associated with partial mastectomy and adjuvant radiotherapy is a valuable breast cancer treatment. Partial breast reconstruction is utilized in cases of partial mastectomy to avoid post-BCT breast deformity. The term “oncoplastic surgery” refers to the combination of quadrantectomy or lumpectomy with partial breast reconstruction. Partial breast mastectomy and partial breast reconstruction with pedicled flaps is an alternative to mastectomy and total breast reconstruction in selected patients. Oncoplastic surgery with a multidisciplinary approach is currently the gold standard treatment in early stage breast cancer. There are two main categories of surgical techniques in partial breast reconstruction: volume displacement and volume replacement. Overcorrection is essential when pedicled flaps are performed in partial breast reconstruction. Perforator or muscle-sparing latissimus dorsi flaps are the first choice of local flap–based partial breast reconstruction. Secondary procedures such as breast lipofilling and contralateral breast reshaping may be required to reach breast symmetry at long-term follow-up.
