Abstract

Geriatric patients are at risk of many safety issues such as adverse drug reactions, medication errors such prescribing errors, transcribing errors, diagnosis errors, dispensing and administration errors, monitoring errors, counseling errors, drug-related problems, medication abuse and misuse, counterfeit, and substandard medications. Ensuring the safety of medications for geriatric patients is very important and requires great efforts from the healthcare professionals, medication safety system, policymakers, and patients. Collaboration between healthcare professionals and good and effective communication are the key to treating geriatric patients’ diseases and conditions, improving their health, relieving the diseases and conditions’ symptoms, decreasing morbidity and mortality, decreasing admission to emergency departments and hospitals including intensive care units, decreasing the cost of illness, improving the quality of life and satisfaction toward healthcare system and services. This chapter aims to discuss the medication safety cases among geriatric patients.
