Abstract
The main reason to incorporate fibers into Portland cement concrete is to improve the cracking deformation characteristics of such a brittle material, increasing not only toughness, impact, and tensile strength but also eliminating temperature- and shrinkage-induced cracks. Several types of fibers have been used to reinforce cement-based materials. This chapter briefly discusses the characteristics of fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC), and the effect of fibers on its physical, chemical, and mechanical properties. It also presents recent advances and future perspectives on FRCs.
